Dimitrios Vergos

Dimitrios Vergos (Greek: Δημήτριος Βέργος, Agios Efstratios May 8, 1886 - Alexandria, Egypt January 3, 1956) was a Greek champion in wrestling, weightlifting and shot put.

Biographical information

Dimitrios Vergos was the son of Nicholas and Helen Vergos Kleitsou. He had 2 other brothers, Constantine and Stelios and a sister, Angeliki. His father belonged to prominent families on the island and the period 1889-1891 was elected secretary and treasurer of the "six-member Church Committee" managed by the ecclesiastical and educational matters in the country.[1] He served in the Greek Army, from which he was dismissed from the June 23, 1916, according to the journey of his dismissal. He later reappeared and fought the expansionist wars of Greece against Turkey for the conquest of Asia Minor, as shown in the 1920 document that gives permission to participate in competitions. In 1939 along with his brothers Constantine and Stylianos "gave into the Community the location Aliki plot, where his expense Community was built in the year 1939 building self egkatastasin Post Office Community Ag Efstratios."[2]

Dimitrios Vergos married Malama Mytilia, daughter of George Mytilia and Athena Liberia from Agios Efstratios and lived in Alexandria until his death in 1956. When Nasser expelled most foreign (non-Egyptians) the Gold came to Athens with her ​​children. Dimitrios Vergos took 8 children, in the following order: Athena, Eurydice, Helen, Georgia, Nicholas, Danae, George and Constantine.

Athletic career

He was involved in wrestling, weightlifting and shot. He was an athlete of the Alexandria Sport Fans Association, Milo Alexandria and of Panellinios.

Vergos' athletic career is known from 8 May 1909, when he participated in athletic games in Alexandria, organized by the local Greek Sport Fans Association. In these games, Vergos came first in one-arm weightlifting with 78 kg and in two-handed weightlifting with 110 kg. He also came second in shot, behind K. Goulakis who threw 9,77 m.[3]

In 1910 he participated in the joint Panhellenic-Panegyptian Games, organized by the Alexandria Sport Fans Association (the only time the SEGAS panhellenic championship was held in Egypt), and was again first in both styles of weightlifting, with 119.5 kg in the two-handed and 76 kg in the one-handed form.

In 1912 he was panhellenic champion in wrestling,[4] participating as a member of the Alexandria Sport Fans Association.[5][6] As the current champion, he was selected by the Greek Olympic Committee for the Greek team of the Stockholm Olympics: "Among the seven athletes who will be sent are: A. Antonopoulos for wrestling, Vergos (from Alexandria) for wrestling, M. Dorizas for discus and shot, Manolasis for long-distance running, M. Nomikos for the javelin throw, Tsiklitiras for jumping.[7]

In the end however, due to unknown reasons Vergos did not participate in the Olympics (possibly because he did not yet have Greek citizenship, but was an Ottoman citizen). From 1920 to 1923, by special permission by the Greek army, he took part in athletic events.

Olympiad in Antwerp (1920)

Dimitris Vergos participated in the 1920 Summer Olympics[8] in the Belgium city of Antwerp. He participated in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling along with Sotirios Notaras and Pavlidis Vasileios.[9] The participation in the Olympic team secured after qualifying races held on June 21, 1920 at the Panathenaic Stadium, which first came to heavy weights with second the third and Spiridi T. Eliopoulos.[10] In old album says that struggled to 82.5 kg.[11] The Olympic records indicated that participated in the Greco-heavy and medium weights in free.

In Greco-Roman fought to heavyweight. Passed without a struggle in the second round where he lost by a knockout in 58 of the Dutch Zaap Stzouverman (Jaap Sjouwerman) and excluded. The final breakdown is listed in 12th place.[12] According to a report of the season was wronged by the referee and meroliptounta there were strong protests by the public for the decision:

In freely participated in the instrument category weights. He went to the races from the second round and was defeated on points by the Swedish Borgkstrom Otto (Otto Borgström). The final breakdown is listed in ninth place.[14]
